Leesburg is considered the seat of Loudoun County. The Town's Historic District is on the National Register for Historic Places. Many of the First Families of Virginia settled in Leesburg including the Carters, Lees, and Masons.
Founded in 1758, the town was named to honor Thomas Lee, a member of the prominent Lee family. Local attractions include several historic properties including Dodona Manor, the home of General George C. Marshall, the Leesburg Courthouse, Morven Park, Glenfiddich House, the Oatlands Historic House and Gardens, Carlheim (Paxton) Mansion, and White's Ferry.

The Thomas Balch Library is a designated Underground Railroad research site. The library contains over 32,000 books, maps, newspapers, government records and manuscripts about the history of Leesburg and Loudoun County. The Thomas Balch Library offers group tours, history classes, and numerous exhibits.

Located along the Potomac River, Ball’s Bluff Battlefield is the site of the first Civil War Battle that occurred in Loudoun County. Fifty-four Union Army soldiers who died at the Battle of Ball’s Bluff are interred in the 25 graves at the cemetery. Visitors to Balls Bluff Battlefield may visit the cemetery, participate in self guided walking tours, and join guided group programs.

The Dodona Manor, former home of General George C. Marshall, serves as a museum to honor his life and work. He served the country for 44 years, including both world wars. His most notable accomplishment was The Marshall Plan that was later awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. Visitors can take a self guided tour of the manor’s sprawling gardens or architecture, and a guided tour of the mansion itself.

Morven Park is a 1,000 acre historic estate that was once home to Westmoreland Davis, a Virginia Governor. It would be the perfect place to spend an afternoon hiking trails or walking through the beautiful gardens. Lovers of carriage driving, hunter/jumper shows, and competitions can visit the prestigious International Equestrian Center. Guests may tour the Davis Mansion, Museum of Hounds and Hunting, and the Winmill Carriage Museum to learn about several of Loudoun's historic families.

Oatlands Historic House and Gardens, formerly Oatlands Plantation, is an estate located in Leesburg, and is operated by the National Trust for Historic Preservation and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places as a National Historic Landmark. The Oatlands includes the main mansion and 415 acres of farmland and gardens, the Carriage House, Bachelor's Cottage, several barns and farm buildings, and a greenhouse.
